| Nov 7-8, 2015 marked a successful weekend for Fencing in the city of Calgary. Events kicked off on Friday, featuring an event for mainly young fencers in thier first competition. |
The Gladiators Fencing Club is grateful for the leadership of Canadian Fencing Federation president Brad Goldie for refereeing and mentoring the young athletes at this event, and his leadership in coaching the group each week. 9 athletes came out to compete and learn about the competition in this developmental event. Saturday saw club members participate in the Priori Fencing Club's fall event, with new fencers showing good form and developing tactics in the Cadet (u17) and open events.
The highlight of the weekend saw the return of the Gladiators Cup youth competition, with close to 40 young athletes from Calgary and Medicine Hat competing in foil competitions from y8 to y14 age categories, with multiple rounds to encourage development of skills in competitively grouped age and skill divisions. Gladiators Fencing Club continues to be be a leader in implementing the Canadian Fencing Federation's Long Term Athlete Development strategy. |
A team event followed the individual events, where young athletes were teamed up with experienced athletes, including former cadet and senior Canadian national team members to mentor the rookies and work with young athletes through the team rounds.
